One question has followed him for most of his life:how do people actually change?

His story

The journey from seeking insight
to discovering the instinctual drive

For years, Bill searched for answers outside himself. Seminary, self-help books, and eventually 25 years of clinical work all circled one question: how do people actually change?

Along the way, he spent years getting lost in relationships — overthinking, people-pleasing, avoiding conflict, and losing his center. He followed the checklist: degree, marriage, stability. From the outside, everything looked right. Inside, something was off. He kept pushing forward, believing that if he just understood enough, the answers would come.

And still — he couldn't move the needle in his own life. There was insight. There was understanding. There was years of work. But when it mattered — he kept making the same mistakes

Overthinking. People-pleasing. Avoiding the hard conversations. Starting things with fire, then letting them quietly die.

There was only so much thinking could do. Only so much looking at the past could do. Only so much self-help could do. Eventually, the question became unavoidable.

Why can't I do
what I already know I need to do?

Everything started to shift when he began exposing himself to discomfort.

He noticed something unexpected: it wasn't the environment that changed him — it was what it activated.

A part of him that didn't show up in therapy, study, or reflection. A part that acted. That moved. That didn't wait. For the first time, he could do what he already knew he needed to do.

That moment led to a seven-year pursuit to understand what he had tapped into and how to access it consistently.Along the way, he created Wilder Wellness Center — the first center in the world dedicated to activating the instinctual drive through cold water immersion and intensive experiential work. It became the laboratory where the core principles of what is now 6 Sides of You were tested and refined

The culmination of discovering the instinctual drive made it impossible to go back. Bill could no longer continue practicing traditional therapy as he was trained. After 17 years working at every level of mental health — from crisis intervention to outpatient work to intensive clinical programs — he walked away from the traditional practice entirely.

He wanted to explore the frontiers of the human psyche. He believed that the foundation of true change isn't found in talk therapy or cognitive restructuring — it's found in unlocking our ancestral intelligence, buried in the primal brain circuits that existed long before language, logic, or self-help books.

So he took the leap of faith. He left the safety of the system he knew and decided to experiment — to see if his theories were true.

What he saw challenged many of the assumptions of traditional evidence-based care. Transformation happened faster. Changes went deeper. People who had been stuck for years began moving in weeks — not because they understood more, but because they had finally accessed the part of themselves that acts.

What he found was this: there's a part of us that determines whether we take action or hold back. And most people have never learned how to access it.

He called it the instinctual drive. It's the bridge between knowing and doing. When it's active, courage rises, hesitation drops, and you move toward what matters — even when it's uncomfortable. When it's dormant, you stay stuck at the edge no matter how much insight you have.

He built 6 Sides of You to measure where the instinctual drive goes quiet — across six core capacities — and to give people a system to strengthen it through real action. Not more insight. Not more understanding. The bridge itself.

Bill has a deep passion for the hero's journey and the stages of life — the moments where everything is on the line, where the old self has to die so the new one can emerge. That's the work. That's who this is for. People standing at the edge of their next chapter, looking for the courage to cross.

Today, his focus is helping people in those seasons of transition find that courage. The assessment is the starting point. The activation is the path. And the bridge? It was inside you the whole time.

He built it because he needed it himself.
The bridge is now yours.

Most people don't need more insight they already have it.

What they need is the courage to act on it.

Your instinct is the bridge. This system makes it strong enough to cross.

Matt spent over a decade doing intensive assessment work with couples, families, and adolescents navigating anxiety and complex life dynamics. He kept seeing the same pattern:

people who understood their struggles clearly — yet still couldn't move forward in the areas that mattered most.

He stepped away from traditional therapy to explore a deeper layer of change what is now referred to as the instinctual drive. He saw that when people reconnect with it, the patterns that once felt overwhelming begin to loosen. Not because they understood more, but because they could finally respond differently in real time.
